We are getting ready for Thanksgiving 2024!!! This will be our second thanksgiving here and yes, it’s not “real” thanksgiving whatever that is. I enjoy thanksgiving like it’s a good Sunday night dinner with family and friends. And no work the next day, so no worries. I loved our first one here. We arrived in around this time and everything was fairly new, and we didn’t know many people. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because I love cooking and consuming my favorite things. Orpha, Nora, and I can focus on those same values in Spain. The real difference here was the lack of drama and major responsibilities that come with a big family dinner.

Forget the Turkey

You can order them here but for 2 adults and 1 toddler, the whole chicken from the grocery is amazing! Not going to lie, the photo above is an exercise in easy to do comfort food. And yes, the coffee carafe is really a wine decanting.

Consider the Following

I work US hours and Nora is in school here in Spain. Meaning, when I get a US holiday, she is in school. This means US holidays are true breaks for me! I can prep all day while Nora is in school and then I can even join for pick-up.

Our Macy’s Day Parade is at 3pm

I remember waking up to watch the parade but having to run back and forth to help in the kitchen, unable to enjoy the parade. Not any more! It really feels like some magical time travel nonsense. Having one foot in the US feels like living in the future at times.

This Year, Our Oven Broke

It’s ill timed, we may or may not have our oven working by thanksgiving. I am taking it as an opportunity to try something really new. As you can imagine, it’s not the same food here. If you know me, you know I have a serious baking and cooking hobby. This has been on pause a bit as we transition to our new surroundings. Of course, you don’t need all the appliances like a food processor or standing mixer, but these things really do make it easier. The first thanksgiving, I still needed to settle an apple pie craving, but did not want to make the crust. I found some pastry dough and made some filling to make a faux pie thing and it was great with coffee! Without the oven, I think I should be looking into making a pear tartan or something.
